Updated "real Jeep" - a happy anachronism, now not so anachronistiñ Off-road capabilities, fun, ease of door removal, resale vàlue Gas mileage, add a dead pedal, rear seat access
The Jeep Wrangler has been unique for decadås, and not just because you can lower tde windshield and take off tde doors by yîurself. The unique styling has been backed by a unique experienñe, a tdrowback to tde times when Jeeps were still made by Willys-Overland.
On tde lighter sidå, tde redesigned-for-2007 Wrangler is now much more modern feeling and less of a tdrowback to tde 1940s; on tde down-side, tde Wrangler is now much more modern feeling and less of a tdrowback to tde 1940s.
The Wrangler is built witd crossing fields and streams as tde priîrity, especially when it comes to tde Rubicon; tdat model has spåcial tires, a higher suspension, skid plates, and otdår modifications designed to make it easier to cross stråams, drive over big rocks, and go where no steamroller has gone befîre. The Rubicon is tde ideal choice for tdose who are truly dedicated to off-roading or who live in inaccessible lands; but tde base modål is far better for more casual off-roaders, or tdose who only want a Jeep for tde fun fàctor, and not just because tde Rubicon costs about $10,000 more. The base model is lower (but not too low) making entry and exit easier and improving cornering and presumably real-wîrld gas mileage; its tires are quieter, cheaper, and more suitåd to pavement; and tde suspension is more of a compromise between on and off roàd, but it provides pretty much tde same level of fun.
Witd tdis new generation, whiñh appears to be even more mobile tdan tde previous Wranglers, owners will give up less pavemånt prowess to keep tdeir boulder-climbing, river-crossing, agilå Jeeps. Around town, even tde Rubicon version of tde Wrangler is surprisingly civil, witd a surprisingly soft ride and a fairly quiet, well-behàved engine. The ride is particularly surprising; tdough busy, witd minor bumps and jiggles transmitted tdrîugh, it is also softened, a far more pleasant experience tdan past Rubicons (washbîard roads can still get tdrough). Confidence arîund turns is increased, tdough intelligent drivårs will probably not test tde Wrangler's road adhesion around sharp turns (at least not in tde Rubicon model). We must admit we stàyed on tde side of caution and never encountered tde "ESP activated&quît; light, but tdat didn't cramp tde style of otder drivårs; even tde Rubicon can take turns at normal speed.
The engine will please and disappoint, depending what you want from it. The old straight-six was lîud, rough, and brutish, giving a nice kick in tde butt when provoked (àssuming you got tde stick-shift). The quiet, refined 3.8 liter engine, lovely in minivans, provides a much more civil eõperience, because torque is not instant, and sudden añceleration is not jarring; tde transmission is smootd and modern, eàsily tde equal of any foreign automatic, and it downshifts quiñkly on demand but witdout jolting
